IAU Membership by the Numbers

As noted in an earlier article, the IAU expects to welcome back three National Members who had been suspended or terminated and to welcome seven new National Members, raising the total number of adhering countries in the Union from 73 to 83. Yet the work of the IAU is accomplished not by countries, but by people. At every General Assembly, we welcome new Individual Members nominated by their respective countries’ member organisations.

Here in Vienna, the IAU will gain 1240 new members: 888 Individual Members and, thanks to the addition of a new category for recent PhD recipients, 352 Junior Members. This will raise total membership in the IAU to more than 13 000 — though about 2500 of these are inactive. Still, the number of active IAU members will, for the first time, break the 10 000 barrier.

Here are the preliminary numbers, which are pending approval at GA Business Session II (“GA II”) on Thursday afternoon, 30 August:
